The Order of Preachers

St. Dominic de Guzman founded the Order of Friars Preachers in 1216 with the basic mission of preaching the Gospel to all people.  Today, we are all over the world, number almost ten thousand, and minister in countless ways.  While we are certainly all different, we share common commitments to Christ, community, and prayer.

The brothers works as pastors, campus ministers, teachers, professors, administrators, social workers, and more.  The friars run Providence College in Rhode Island, Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, the Dominican Houses of Studies in Washington and Berkley, and are affiliated with a number of other colleges and universities.

The life of a Dominican is marked by four pillars: prayer, study, community, and preaching.  To be a Dominican is to balance a life of active ministry in the service of the Church, as well as maintain a life of contemplation and monastic observance.  All of this for the greater glory of God!
